the information that ted kennedy jr. will not run. scott brown doing well in all the polls. president obama will be fully engaminged in pass pass. how is that looking? they don't have a big horse to run. >> the polls show a good chance of scott brown being able to at least have the even money to win back a senate seat in massachusetts. when you talk to the democrats, they say look, the way that scott brown was able to win in 2010 were under very special circumstances. huh a democratic candidate who was not running a good campaign. the democrats were caught unaware and very surprised. you had that very tough debate on health care. you have the vacancy and democrats say you won't have all the situations at the end. they might be able to beat scott brown in a special contest. >> always tough. you think they can pull it off. lastly it was about chuck hegel, feeling it from the left and the right. the defense built up and every time he takes a twitter, he seems to take out chuck hegel. it was a process by which the president gets leaked out. >> two problems that are besetting chuck hegel. he is

before we go, real quick, ed markey, your colleague, can he beat scott brown? >> i think so, and the issue is this, in 2010, scott brown was a very decent guy, but a member of this very right-wing party. he's got this problem in massachusetts, especially since in 2010 it was his election that really harolderalded a lot of problems for president obama. massachusetts vote ed overwhel overwhelmingly for president obama. running as a representative for the republican party in the senate to ask for a repudiation of barack obama is a problem. >> going to be fascinating. >> this is not just ed markey on the ballot. this is president obama and ed markey, and i think the people of massachusetts are unlikely to, in effect, reverse their vote of just a couple months ago. >> it's an all boston college race with scott brown and ed markey, the school you represented for over, i believe, 30 years. >> 32. >> thanks for being on the show. we appreciate it. >> thank you, luke. >>> we'll be right back here on msnbc, the place for politics. don't go anywhere. >>> i'm luke russert live from wash
. as you can see, stocks plunged. shortly after noon, senator scott brown posted on facebook of all things that he was headed back to washington because the president had reached out to the gop leadership with a proposal. then the markets bounced up a bit. but then cnbc's john harwood tweeted the white house denied skost brown's post and markets dropped again. thanks, john, for that. then came a late day surge on news that speaker boehner called the house back to washington, and late today we learned that the white house is holding a conference call with ceos on the status of the fiscal cliff negotiations. so maybe things will change once more again tomorrow. joining me now to discuss the business ramifications and what the markets think of all this, the editor of thegrio.com and msnbc contributor joy reid. >> hey, richard. >> hi, joy. do we also have fortune magazine's assistant, yes, excellent, managing editor, leigh gallagher. thanks for joining us, too. wall street seems to have been naive, maybe a little simplistic, about washington's ability to get the deal done. do you think they're

. and scott brown with a command been lead in a lot of the polls. can any democrat give him a run for his money? >> i think so. i think several members have talked about running. it's a very democratic state. i think the republican party brand is at an all-time low. by the time we get to the special election in march or april, it will probably be lower based on the performance this week, so i think we'll have a real good shot. the white house and party are going to commit to do whatever they can to make sure we're competitive. >> can i respond quickly? >> very quickly. >> scott brown is a different kind of republican, very moderate. most massachusetts individuals really like him a lot. his only downfall is he was running for reelection in a heavy presidential year. >>> a major turning point for the housing market. we'll have that next. >>> president george h.w. bush is in guarded condition. a family spokesman says his doctors are cautiously optimistic. he's alert, talking with his family, but a few setbacks have kept him in the hospital, including a persistent fever. >>> it looks like 201
brown who does very well in special elections. he's the republican who stunned the world in 2010 and grabbed a seat. he lost it in the tough election this time around but in a special election, a low voter turnout, he'll be strong and we're not seeing much from the national democrats yet and i think they got a real problem here. >> frank, talk about that. because obviously if the democrats only -- and duval patrick wants someone interim in the post aend not run in the special election, wouldn't it make sense that person would gain the traction they need in a special election to face-off against someone with star power like scott brown? we look at the latest wbr poll with 58% favorable even after the bruising against elizabeth warren. do we know if he wants it? >> we don't know officially. his father died a couple of days ago so all attempts to get to him is put off and you saw him election night, came out and gracious and talked about coming back, the sub text there was there's a special election and farewell address to the u.s. senate, last couple of weeks ago, he said the same

brown follower. i think he's a little different, in my book, but that tweet he sent where the president made the gop a deal and he was jumping on a plane and all of a sudden the white house denied it's true and now we see that the house of representatives, for no apparent tangible reason, going to be back in session on sunday, i personally think scott brown tweeted something he wasn't supposed to. i think there is movement there, and i think maybe his tweet offers us a clue, even though nobody want to acknowledge the characters in kabuki theser. >> isn't that interesting. andrew, it all comes as the volatility index, the fear indicator in the market has been rising. we were back in yellow black territory, above 20 for the first time since july. which would mean that the market was actually getting sweaty palms here, don't you think? >> yeah. it's getting pretty chaotic. the interesting thing to me is you look at the volume. the volume is extremely low. look at a stock like apple. shares 20 million shares in a day. today half the volume. traded 10 million shares. came out and said the ho
